What is a text QR code?
A text QR code stores raw alphanumeric characters directly in the image modules. When scanned by a smartphone or dedicated barcode scanner, the device displays the raw text immediately on screen rather than attempting to open a website link.
Because there is no web address involved, text QR codes require no internet connectivity or server-side database. The text is entirely self-contained inside the code, making it an incredibly robust and permanent way to store data offline.
Perfect use cases for text QR codes
Text QR codes are excellent for environments where cellular data or Wi-Fi is unavailable or unnecessary. They are frequently used for industrial inventory tagging, serial number labeling on machines, product barcodes, classroom handouts, and physical hints in museum exhibits.
They are also highly useful for developers, system administrators, and makers who want to encode configuration keys, brief offline logs, or plain text instructions directly on physical hardware labels.
Keep your plain text concise
Every additional character you type increases the density of the QR pattern, adding more square modules to the grid. A very long block of text results in a highly dense, complex pattern which can be extremely difficult to print cleanly at small sizes or scan with budget phone cameras.
For optimum readability and scan speed, keep your text content concise. If your text exceeds a couple of sentences, consider hosting the text on a website and generating a URL QR code instead.

FAQ
Do text QR codes need internet to work?
No. Because the raw text is stored entirely inside the QR pattern itself, the scanning device does not need a cellular data connection or Wi-Fi to read and display the text content.
What is the character limit for a text QR code?
While static QR codes can technically hold up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters, we strongly recommend keeping your plain text under 300 characters. This keeps the pattern simple and fast to scan at standard print sizes.
Can I add formatting (like bold or lists) to the text?
Standard QR readers display raw plain text only and do not support HTML or Markdown formatting. If you need rich formatting, it is best to link to a formatted web page instead.
